| The area is one of outstanding natural beauty and ideal for walking, gentle or strenuous.
Short car journeys (12 miles) take one to the Lael Forest Walk, Corrieshalloch Gorge and the food-for-free mussel beds at the head of Loch Broom. The same distance to the North is the Inverpolly Nature Reserve (Knockan Cliff Geological Nature Trail, ascent of Stac Polly, 2009 ft). Further afield to the North is the spectacular coast road to Achiltibuie with boats to the Summer Isles, salmon fisheries and hydroponics centre, smoked foods and sea bathing.
Lochinver (fishing port, gentle walk to Falls of Kirkaig and wonderful views of the Sutherland mountains, including the bizarre Suliven). 50 miles to the south are the magnificent and surprisingly sub-tropical gardens at Inverewe (National Trust).
There are guide books and maps in the house and a branch of the Scottish Tourist Board in Ullapool. |
